Car Accidents in Hawaii
Driving while distracted has been shown to be more dangerous than driving under the influence. This fact is supported by crash statistics that indicate that in 2012, police issued more than 5,0000 tickets relating to operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic handheld device statewide, dwarfing the number of alcohol-related citations in that same year.
Hawaii is working hard to fight distracted driving, which is the number one cause of car accidents in the United States. The omnipresence of mobile phones and an ever-growing preoccupation with social media in all its forms have forever changed the way drivers behave behind the wheel.
Another major contributor to vehicle accidents throughout the state is speeding. The Hawaii Department of Transportation has attempted to reduce the number of speed-related crashes and associated deaths by increasing the penalties inflicted upon those cited for the act.
In spite of their best efforts, however, car accidents continue to happen daily and present long-term consequences for injured victims as well as their families.
