Kahului, HI – Elderly Man Killed in Vehicle Crash at Maui Lani Pky and Kuikahi Dr

September 16, 2022

Kahului, HI (September 15, 2022) – A 74-year-old man from Kahului died when a vehicle slammed into a tree on Maui on Wednesday, September 14th.

The crash occurred at about 2:20 p.m. in the area of Kuikahi Drive and Maui Lani Parkway.

An investigation showed that a 2020 Honda CR-V was heading northeast on Kuikahi Drive when the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate the turn and plowed through the grassy median and into oncoming traffic.

The vehicle then jumped the curb and crashed into a tree.

One of the vehicle’s occupants was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. He passed away a short while later.

Officials said speed does not appear to be a factor but the involvement of alcohol and drugs is pending.

This is Maui County’s 16th vehicular fatality this year, compared to 11 at this time in 2021.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Wrongful Death Suits in Hawaii

Kahului, HI - Elderly Man Killed in Vehicle Crash at Maui Lani Pky and Kuikahi Dr

If the death was caused by a driver under the influence, elder abuse, a loose handrail in a stairwell, a faulty smoke alarm, or any other wrongful or negligent act, taking swift legal action will ensure that your lawyer has ample time to investigate the events surrounding the death and build a strong case.

Similar to other kinds of civil injury cases, families who file a wrongful death suit will have to prove that the defendant is responsible for the death of their loved one through negligence or, according to liability laws, is otherwise accountable.

For instance, a person could be found liable for wrongful death if:

  • Their negligence caused the victim’s death, as in a fatal car crash
  • They were a designer, manufacturer, distributor, retailer, or other commercial entity liable for a dangerous or defective product
  • They were a physician, nurse, or other health care provider who committed medical malpractice by failing to meet the standard of care when treating the victim
  • Knowingly and willingly committed assault or murder
  • They were the owner of a property that had an unaddressed danger that led to a guest’s death
