Honolulu, HI – Woman Dead in Pedestrian Collision at Vineyard Blvd & Pali Hwy

December 3, 2024

Honolulu, HI (December 3, 2024) – Honolulu Police Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to a pedestrian versus car crash in Nuuanu on Monday, December 2.

According to Honolulu EMS, the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Pali Highway. Paramedics responded to the scene and provided advanced trauma skills to a woman in her 60s. The woman was transported to a trauma hospital in critical condition; she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police initiated a road closure for the eastbound lanes of Vineyard after Pali Highway and for Bishop Street at Beretania. Investigators say they do not believe that speeding, drugs, or alcohol played a factor in the crash. However, no other details have been released, and witnesses or anybody else with information about the incident were asked to contact the HPD right away.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s family.

Pedestrian Deaths in Hawaii

According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrians were involved in almost 10% of all highway-related deaths nationwide over the last decade. In the United States alone, officials say these figures equate to more than 5,000 pedestrian deaths annually. Additionally, data revealed that over 80,000 pedestrians sustain injuries annually as a result of incidents involving motor vehicles.

Tragically, Hawaii has a much greater incidence of pedestrian accidents per capita compared to the rest of the country. Every year, more than 500 pedestrian injuries and 30 pedestrian fatalities occur in Hawaii. Moreover, pedestrians and bicyclists are more likely to suffer severe and fatal injuries in accidents because they do not have the protection provided by a traditional passenger vehicle. As a result, they suffer significant trauma to the head, internal organ injuries, and other injuries that can ultimately take their lives. The sudden and unexpected loss of a loved one due to a fatal collision can be incredibly difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, we see countless accidents take place right here in Hawaii, leaving families to deal with overwhelming consequences.

Pedestrian injuries, depending on their severity, are often extremely painful or even deadly. Collisions involving pedestrians and vehicles, regardless of speed or location, typically produce catastrophic, disabling injuries due to the force of the impact and weight of the average automobile. Common injuries reported in instances involving pedestrian accidents in Hawaii include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries
  • Bone breaks and fractures
  • Torn ligaments and tendons
  • Damage to the spine’s soft tissues and herniated discs

Serious injuries, costly medical bills, and emotional trauma impact these victims disproportionately. Thankfully, pedestrians in Hawaii can get financial compensation for their injuries in the event of a car accident, just as a driver or passenger would in the event of a multi-vehicle crash.
