Honolulu, HI – Six Hospitalized in Motorcycle Collision at Kunia & Lyman Rds
April 17, 2024
Honolulu, HI (April 17, 2024) – On Monday evening, a vehicle collided head-on with a group of six motorcyclists, sending at least six people to the hospital.
The collision occurred at Kunia and Lyman Roads, near Wheeler Army Airfield, at approximately 6:45 p.m. According to officers with the Honolulu Police Department, after traveling southbound on Kunia Road, a 41-year-old woman entered the northbound lane and collided with the motorcyclists. Per Honolulu EMS, six motorcyclists, including three women and three men aged 20 to 40, were hospitalized. The six motorcyclists were injured as part of a convoy of at least 21.
As the emergency room of Wahiawa General Hospital was closed, the patients were transported to three separate facilities via ambulance. One woman among the six injured motorcyclists, according to authorities, was in extremely critical condition. Four other individuals were transported to the hospital in critical condition, while one individual was transferred in stable condition. The car’s driver also sustained severe injuries. The area was closed pending the investigation, which remains active and ongoing.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Unfortunately, motorcyclists are nearly entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which makes motorcycle riding extremely dangerous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:
- Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe vehicle control and experience impaired judgment.
- Driver distraction: Many accidents occur on our roadways because drivers simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
- Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that harm others. Many accidents occur because drivers zip between lanes of travel, tailgate other vehicles, or are reckless while operating their cars.
