Hawaii Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accidents can leave victims with severe or even fatal injuries. Each year, thousands of cyclists suffer serious injuries in the United States and in Hawaii. Oftentimes, these crashes happen due to the negligent actions of drivers. Because drivers have more reasons than ever to become distracted while behind the wheel, they often do not see bicyclists until it is too late, resulting in a collision and injuries for the bike rider.
When cyclists are struck by large, heavy vehicles, the injuries they often sustain are pretty severe. A human body is no match for a truck, car, or even a motorcycle, especially one in motion. Additionally, riders can easily be ejected from their bicycles and receive secondary wounds after they abruptly contact the asphalt, another vehicle, structures, or buildings in the immediate vicinity.
Some of the most common injuries suffered by bicyclists in Hawaii crashes include:
- Broken bones
- Spinal cord injury
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Lacerations
- Internal organ damage
These and several other injuries that result from bicycle vs. car accidents can cause a significant amount of pain, both emotional and physical. Additionally, injuries of considerable severity can keep victims out of work for weeks or longer, resulting in a significant loss of income. In extreme cases, a victim might even require in-home medical care to help them with daily needs and tasks.
Bicycle collisions occur every single day throughout the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that over 50,000 cyclists sustained injuries in traffic accidents in 2012. Most of these incidents were caused by negligent drivers.
