Honolulu, HI (September 21, 2024) – Officials in Honolulu say that a person died on Saturday morning, September 21, in a fiery vehicle crash on the H-3 freeway near the Kaneohe-bound tunnel, which clogged traffic for hours.
Honolulu Fire Department authorities said firefighters responded to a 911 call at 10:15 a.m., reporting a motor vehicle collision on the H-3 freeway near the Harano Tunnels. Three HFD units and ten firefighters responded and found a vehicle engulfed in flames, officials noted. The fire was extinguished at 10:40 a.m., and one of the drivers was found dead, authorities confirmed.
Emergency Medical Services paramedics pronounced the person deceased at the site, though the person’s gender and approximate age were not released. State Department of Transportation officials said the Kaneohe-bound lanes of H-3 were closed for about five hours as police investigated. All lanes were reopened before 4:00 p.m. Honolulu police have not released any details about the crash or victim, and it’s unclear if anybody else was hurt, but an investigation remains active and ongoing.
Our deepest condolences are extended to the deceased victim’s family. Our thoughts are with any injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
Major Vehicle Accidents in Hawaii
There are approximately one million registered vehicles in Hawaii. Each year, approximately 10,000 crashes resulting in serious injuries are reported in the Aloha State. Sadly, the number of traffic-related fatalities has also been on the rise in recent years. In one recent year, 94 people were killed in Hawaii car accidents, up from 85 the year before. The causes of these individual accidents will be carefully investigated by authorities. However, we often see that negligent drivers are responsible for the most serious Hawaii car accidents.
Unfortunately, according to statistics, the increasing number of automobile collisions in the United States is caused by motorist negligence. Drunk driving, speeding, driver preoccupation, and driver fatigue are the four primary causes of driver negligence in Hawaii and nationwide. In the United States, nine out of ten automobile collisions are caused by careless drivers. These facts point to the likelihood that a negligent driver caused your accident.
