October 31, 2024
Honolulu, HI (October 31, 2024) – Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said a motorcyclist is in critical condition following a crash on Oahu’s North Shore.
Officials said the crash involved a motorcycle and a car, and authorities added that the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway near Ke Nui Road on Thursday afternoon. EMS units said a 26-year-old man was treated and taken to a nearby hospital. The woman driving the car was listed in stable condition.
Authorities initially shut down Kamehameha Highway in the Haleiwa-bound direction, then closed both directions shortly before 8:00 p.m. However, further information was not provided publicly. HPD officers asked witnesses to get in touch as they launched an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcyclists are rendered entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which renders motorcycle riding extremely hazardous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:
- Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe control of their vehicle and experience impaired judgment.
- Driver distraction: There are so many accidents that take place on our roadways as a result of drivers simply not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
- Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that severely harm others. We see many accidents take place as a result of drivers who zip between lanes of travel, tailgating other vehicles, and are reckless while operating their cars.
