April 20, 2022
Honolulu, HI (April 20, 2022) – A motorcyclist was killed on Tuesday, April 19th during a two-vehicle accident near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Police said that the bike, operated by a 21-year-old man, collided with an SUV that failed to yield on Highway 11 directly in front of the park’s entrance at about 8:00 a.m.
An investigation determined that the motorcyclist was traveling northbound towards Hilo when he crashed into an SUV making a lefthand turn.
The 65-year-old woman driving the SUV was unharmed.
Hawaii County police shut down the highway in both directions for several hours as they conducted their investigation.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcycles account for only 3% of all registered vehicles in Hawaii, but they are involved in nearly 15% of all fatal traffic collisions. Motorcycle accidents are typically very serious because not only are riders fully exposed to other vehicles and the asphalt, but they lack even the most rudimentary of safety features.
The NHTSA’s Share the Road program was created for the sole purpose of raising awareness of the safety of motorcyclists. Regrettably, motorcycle crashes still happen, and most riders find themselves critically injured in the aftermath.
If you were injured during a motorcycle accident in Hawaii, you might be entitled to collect compensation that can cover your medical costs, lost income from being unable to work, and other damages.
