Honolulu, HI – Man Dies in Motorcycle Collision at Ala Moana Blvd

April 23, 2024

Honolulu, HI (April 23, 2024) – Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reports that a motorcyclist has died in an accident that took place on Ala Moana Boulevard.

On Sunday night, around 10:30 p.m., EMS responded to a motorcycle accident at Ala Moana and Hobron Lane. The 34-year-old man on the motorcycle was ejected as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. EMTs also responded to assess the other victims involved, though it’s unclear if any other injuries requiring hospitalization occurred in the incident. HPD reported that the man was wearing a helmet, though it’s not yet known if speed, alcohol, or drugs were a factor in the crash. The area was closed pending the investigation, which remains active and ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family. Our thoughts are with any injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii

Unfortunately, motorcyclists are nearly entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which makes motorcycle riding extremely dangerous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:

  • Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe vehicle control and experience impaired judgment.
  • Driver distraction: Many accidents occur on our roadways because drivers simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
  • Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that harm others. Many accidents occur because drivers zip between lanes of travel, tailgate other vehicles, or are reckless while operating their cars.
