January 31, 2025

Honolulu, HI (January 31, 2025) – The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that a 21-year-old woman struck by a vehicle last week near the 10-mile marker on Highway 11 in Kurtistown has died.

She was identified as Jahnya Serquina-Octubre of Mountain View. Serquina-Octubre was unresponsive at the scene of the collision and transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition. She was pronounced dead around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28.

It remains unclear if the driver involved stayed at the scene or if any contributing factors, such as speeding or impaired driving, played a role in the collision. Updates will follow as authorities continue to investigate.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s family members.

Pedestrian Accidents in Hawaii

Hawaii sees a concerning number of pedestrian accidents each year, with urban and rural areas alike experiencing collisions involving those on foot. According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, an average of 25 pedestrians lose their lives annually in the state, with many more suffering serious injuries. The risks are particularly high at night and in areas with high foot traffic, like shopping districts.

Here are some common factors and outcomes of pedestrian accidents:

  • Low Visibility: Nighttime accidents are often caused by poor lighting or drivers failing to see pedestrians crossing streets or walking along roadways.
  • Injury Severity: Pedestrians are highly vulnerable to injuries like fractures, head trauma, or internal injuries, given the lack of physical protection compared to vehicle occupants.
  • Distracted Driving: Drivers not paying full attention to the road—whether due to phones, navigation systems, or other distractions—are a major cause of accidents.
  • Economic and Emotional Burdens: Beyond physical injuries, victims often face steep medical bills, missed work, and emotional trauma as they recover.
