Honolulu, HI – Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Hwy 11 Under Inquiry
February 3, 2025
Honolulu, HI (February 3, 2025) – A fatal traffic collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle occurred on Highway 11 in Keaʻau on the morning of Sunday, February 2.
Authorities received a call regarding the accident just after 10:30 a.m. It was reported that three motorcycles were traveling on Highway 11 Hilo bound when the lead motorcycle was involved in a crash with a sedan, turning onto Highway 11.
The lead motorcycle, operated by a 32-year-old Puna man, then struck a second motorcycle, operated by a 38-year-old Puna woman. The female biker then lost control of her motorcycle and slid off the roadway. The third biker, a 41-year-old Kona man, was able to avoid the collision and was not injured.
The 32-year-old Puna man was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. The sedan was operated by a 34-year-old Mountain View woman who had a juvenile passenger. Neither was seriously injured, but both victims were transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center as a precaution.
At this time, Honolulu police have not reported any other injuries or the possible causes or factors of the accident. However, HPD officers asked witnesses to get in touch as they launched an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family members. Our thoughts are also with the injured in hopes of their full recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcyclists are rendered entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which renders motorcycle riding extremely hazardous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:
- Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe control of their vehicle and experience impaired judgment.
- Driver distraction: There are so many accidents that take place on our roadways as a result of drivers simply not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
- Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that severely harm others. We see many accidents take place as a result of drivers who zip between lanes of travel, tailgating other vehicles, and are reckless while operating their cars.
