Hawaii Car Accidents

Car wrecks happen numerous times per day in Hawaii. Three leading causes of auto accidents in the state include:

  • Driver distraction
  • Driver intoxication
  • Speeding

The United States has conducted studies to suggest that distracted driving is actually less safe than driving while intoxicated. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that about 10% of all fatal accidents throughout the nation involve a distracted driver. This represents over 3,000 fatalities per year.

Driving while distracted includes any action that takes a driver’s attention away from the roadway for any amount of time. Information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that driving at 55 miles per hour without looking at the road is equivalent to driving the length of a football field while blindfolded.

It is illegal to use a cell phone while driving in the state of Hawaii unless the device is hands-free. Texting and driving are also against the law, and drivers under the age of 18 are strictly prohibited from using any type of electronic device while driving.

Safety instantly becomes a major issue when a driver is paying attention to anything other than the road in front of them and the vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists around them.

Regardless of the harsh penalties constantly implemented against negligent drivers in Hawaii, it still remains a serious issue that causes injuries and fatalities.
